In a recent opinion piece for Computer Weekly, Jack Capel, UK South Director, expresses that organisations must get their data foundation right before diving into AI.

They emphasise that for AI to deliver reliable insights, data needs to be “AI‑ready”, properly tagged, governed, curated and managed. Without this, even the most advanced AI systems can struggle to interpret information accurately.

Capel explains that assembling the right team is just as critical as managing the data itself. A high-performing data team combines technical experts such as data engineers, architects, scientists and analysts with emerging roles like “data translators” who bridge the gap between business and technology. Success depends not only on skills but also on cultural fit, collaboration, and the ability to turn data into actionable business value.

He also notes the importance of leadership and that a Head of Data or Chief Data Officer should have board-level visibility to ensure data strategy aligns with organisational priorities, and data literacy should extend across the company to unlock its full potential.
