Harvey Nash is really proud to be partnered with a global FMCG organisation, based in Manchester. Reporting into the Head of Data, this role will play a pivotal part; collaborating with the business on the successful delivery products within an Agile environment.

This role is based in Global IT department and is expected to be self-sufficient and able to manage their own workload/priorities based on the needs of the data team and business. They will forge strong working relationships with business functions worldwide, being an enabler of data use in every team.

The successful Senior Data Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining various BI systems and technologies that enable data-driven decision making and insight. You will work with data analysts, data scientists, and other stakeholders to understand their data needs and deliver scalable and robust solutions. You will also create and maintain data warehouses and data lakes, dashboards, reports, and data models that support various business functions and objectives. As a senior member of the team, the Senior Data Engineer will mentor and train junior members of staff on ETL, data modelling, reporting as well as lead engagements with the wider business stakeholders.

Overview of the Data Team

The Data team works closely with business across the in-market teams to establish the foundations, practises and solutions spanning our Data Arena. The team is based within the group, responsible for delivering centralised solutions to support the market execution around the globe, driving exceptional Data and Insight experiences across our platforms and channels.

Senior Data Engineer Role/Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance BI systems and technologies, such as data warehouses, data lakes, dashboards, reports, and data models, using SQL, Python, and other tools.
  • Collaborate with data analysts, data scientists, and other stakeholders to understand their data requirements and provide data solutions that meet their needs.
  • Perform data analysis, data validation, and data quality checks to ensure the accuracy and reliability of BI data and outputs.
  • Implement and refine strong patterns and standards relating to data modelling, data pipelines and change management
  • Transformation of data into usable structures.
  • Optimise and improve the performance, scalability, and security of BI systems and technologies.
  • Create data observability processes to highlight data quality issues and general health of the data products deployed
  • Develop release pipelines for the data platform using Github Actions
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any data or BI issues that may arise.
  • Document and communicate BI best practices, standards, and processes.
  • Stay updated with the latest trends and developments in BI and data analytics.
  • Supporting end users through training and documentation.
  • Mentoring and training junior staff.
  • Ensure that data compliance and security requirements are met during system build.

To be successful in this Senior Data Engineer role, you will need to have the below skills/experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a numerate/technological field.
  • Extensive experience in BI development, data engineering, or a similar role.
  • Proficient in SQL and data warehousing technologies, such as Snowflake, Synapse, Redshift, or BigQuery.
  • Experience of Azure technologies, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks and Azure DevOps.
  • Understanding of data modelling.
  • Understanding of data lakes and best practice.
  • Experience of working within a CI/CD deployment framework
  • Experience in data visualisation and reporting tools, such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker.
  • Experience gathering data requirements.
  • Experience in programming languages, such as Python, R, or Java.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of the Microsoft cloud ecosystem.
  • Experience in training and mentoring junior staff.
  • Experience working with an agile framework, such as Scrum, Kanban etc.
