Overview

We're hiring a DevOps Engineer to support the infrastructure, automation, and deployment of a strategic platform for the UK Central Government. The project is underpinned by modern DevOps and infrastructure-as-code practices, with a focus on AWS but also supporting some workloads in Azure.

As a key contributor, you'll help ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of the platform, from code commit through to production deployment. This is a hands-on, delivery-led role ideal for DevOps professionals who enjoy building efficient pipelines and enabling high-performing engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain secure, scalable cloud infrastructure using Terraform, predominantly in AWS.
  • Support the delivery and automation of infrastructure changes across environments using Git workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Design, manage, and optimise GitHub Actions pipelines, including YAML-based build and release definitions.
  • Implement and support containerised deployments using Docker and ECS, ensuring alignment with microservices principles.
  • Set up and manage load balancing, scaling, and orchestration patterns to support high-availability services.
  • Troubleshoot infrastructure and deployment issues across cloud environments and collaborate with developers to resolve blockers.
  • Monitor and improve platform performance, availability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Ensure infrastructure is aligned with internal security, compliance, and resilience standards.

Required Technical Experience

  • Proven experience delivering infrastructure and automation solutions on AWS (primary cloud), with some knowledge of Azure.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with Terraform and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of GitHub Actions, Git, and CI/CD processes.
  • Experience with Docker, container orchestration, and hosting containers on AWS ECS.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure monitoring, logging, and scaling patterns in cloud-native environments.
  • Comfortable scripting and working with YAML and CLI tools.
  • Understanding of DevSecOps principles and secure-by-design cloud patterns.

Ways of Working & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Ability to work independently while closely supporting the broader development team.
  • Comfortable collaborating with developers, architects, and project stakeholders to translate needs into technical delivery.
  • Proactive in identifying infrastructure risks or inefficiencies and recommending improvements.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery teams with shared ownership of outcomes.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills - able to articulate trade-offs and operational risks to a broad audience.

This role is ideal for an experienced DevOps Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, thrives in delivery-led environments, and is motivated by the opportunity to work on high-profile government platforms.
