Network Engineer| 6 Month Contract | (Outside IR35) | Hybrid, Edinburgh| Starting ASAP

About the Role:

Harvey Nash's Pub Sec client is looking for a Network Engineer for building, deploying and maintaining the clients full IT infrastructure. This includes Windows Server environments, SAN storage, virtualisation platforms, Unix server applications, networking technologies, internet connections, Windows desktops, mobile devices and application packaging.

You will provide technical support and solutions to council staff, pupils and partner organisations, while contributing to a process‑focused IT service management approach and supporting project delivery.

As part of the Service Centre Team, you will deliver high‑level technical expertise across one or more areas such as client and server management, Unix environments (Oracle, Solaris, Linux), Wintel, technical security and networking. You may also be required to support any area of the wider IT infrastructure when needed.

Main Duties

  • Build, deploy and maintain the council's IT infrastructure, including servers, storage, virtualisation, Unix systems, networking, desktops, mobile devices and application packaging.
  • Provide technical support and solutions for staff, pupils and partners, ensuring issues are resolved within agreed service levels.
  • Support a process‑focused IT service management approach and contribute technical expertise to projects.
  • Deliver specialist skills across areas such as client and server management, Unix environments, Wintel, security and networking, while remaining flexible to support any part of the wider infrastructure.
  • Improve service delivery by analysing incidents, customer feedback and platform data, identifying recurring problems and implementing fixes.
  • Assist the Service Centre in meeting quality standards, KPIs and service availability targets.
  • Contribute to service continuity planning, operational procedures and change management activities.
  • Work closely with the Service Desk to support effective incident management and provide cover during busy periods or absences.
  • Plan and manage your own workload within a performance framework, delivering high‑quality technical outputs.
  • Implement, maintain and troubleshoot complex infrastructure components, and provide guidance to project managers, colleagues and technical teams.
  • Communicate effectively with management, suppliers and internal teams to support planning, technical changes and problem resolution.
  • Mentor less experienced colleagues and prepare or review technical documentation.
  • Analyse availability, performance and capacity data to support root‑cause investigations and future improvements.
  • Track time spent across BAU and project activities to maintain accurate workload reporting.

Essential Skills & Experience:

Two years' experience of implementing and supporting a similar size network structure in 1 or more of the following technical specialisms.

  • Client and Server Management
  • Fortinet Firewall administration
  • Avaya IPT Networking Technologies
  • Extreme EXOS and VOSS LAN switching
  • ExtremeIQ WLAN management

Experience in the application of IT security controls
Experience in contributing to team activities and tasks
Strong customer focus
Ability to make sound decisions and prioritise work for self
Comprehensive analytical skills to comprehend complex technical reports or system performance information
Ability to produce meaningful and concise written reports of a technical nature
Ability to self-learn and maintain a comprehensive understanding of current and future trends in IT technology
Ability to work well under pressure
Knowledge and application of ITIL

Desirable Qualifications

  • Project management PRINCE2 foundation certificate or knowledge/application of PRINCE2
  • Technical accreditations in one or more areas of technical specialism
  • Experience of supporting a diverse range of technical platforms
  • Experience working on IT projects
  • Experience in providing input to the development of strategies, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of IT Service Continuity procedures
  • ITIL v3 Foundation certificate or above
