Location: Hybrid - 2 days/week onsite across Leeds / occasional Bradford

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Agile Delivery Lead / Release Train Engineer (RTE) to support an app delivery function undergoing structural transition. This is a hands‑on role requiring someone who has successfully improved delivery effectiveness in complex, multi‑squad engineering environments.

The team consists of 90 FTE across three squads (with a fourth forming), currently shifting away from a federated model to a more integrated structure. Delivery foundations exist but require greater consistency, predictability, and flow.

This role is ideal for someone who can operate at pace, introduce structure without unnecessary bureaucracy, and work closely with engineering, delivery, and business stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Establish & Improve Delivery Flow

  • Implement consistent flow from idea → build → release.
  • Increase cadence, predictability, and transparency across all squads.
  • Ensure delivery roadmaps and release plans are clear, reliable, and understood.

Embed Agile & Scaled Delivery Practices

  • Lead and embed PI Planning, cross-squad planning, and transitional planning activities.
  • Standardise ways of working: stand-ups, retrospectives, showcases, planning sessions.
  • Introduce lightweight but effective delivery frameworks and rituals.

Dependency & Risk Management

  • Identify, manage, and unblock cross-squad dependencies.
  • Improve communication loops between Delivery Leads, Engineering Managers, and Programme Manager.

Capability Uplift

  • Mentor and coach delivery teams and engineering teams in agile delivery best practice.
  • Support uplift of Scrum Master capability (including identifying gaps and proposing solutions).
  • Leave behind clear artefacts, templates, processes, and knowledge transfer.

Environment & Stakeholders

  • Working alongside an established Programme Manager
  • Collaborating with Delivery Leads, Engineering Managers, and Product people.
  • Operating across a transitioning engineering structure (FE/BE/UX/Test previously federated).
  • Strong stakeholder engagement required across both delivery and the wider business.

Experience Required

  • Significant experience as an Agile Delivery Lead, RTE, or Senior Scrum Master in multi-squad environments.
  • Proven track record of stabilising or restructuring delivery functions.
  • Experience operating within scaled agile environments (SAFe desirable but not essential).
  • Ability to implement planning rituals, sequencing, dependency management, and delivery frameworks.
  • Strong coaching mindset, able to uplift teams and embed lasting ways of working.
  • Comfortable working at pace, bringing clarity and structure without overcomplication.
  • Experience in hybrid engineering environments with cross-functional squads.
