IT Engineer| 3 Month Contract | (Outside IR35) | Hybrid, Edinburgh| Starting ASAP

About the Role:

Harvey Nash's Pub Sec client is looking for an IT Engineer for building, maintaining and supporting the clients IT infrastructure across servers, storage, virtualisation, networking, security, desktop, mobile and application deployment. You will be delivering technical support to staff and partners, resolving incidents to SLA timescales, and contributing to service improvement, continuity planning and change management. You will also provide specialist skills within your technical area while also supporting the wider infrastructure when required, working on projects, analysing performance data, identifying root causes, and developing effective technical solutions. The role also includes mentoring colleagues, producing documentation, assisting the Service Desk during peak demand, engaging with suppliers, and ensuring high-quality, customer-focused service delivery.

Main Duties:

  • Build, deploy and maintain the council's IT infrastructure across servers, storage, virtualisation, networking, security, desktop, mobile and application deployment.
  • Provide technical support to staff, pupils and partners, resolving incidents within SLA targets.
  • Deliver specialist skills in areas such as Wintel, Unix/Linux, Oracle/Solaris, networking, client/server management and technical security.
  • Support all areas of the IT infrastructure when required and assist the IT Service Desk during high demand or absence.
  • Contribute to IT service management processes, service improvement, continuity planning and change management.
  • Participate in projects, providing technical input, planning and supporting delivery.
  • Analyse performance, capacity and availability data to identify root causes and prevent recurring issues.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation and support the development of less experienced team members.
  • Engage with suppliers on technical issues and communicate effectively with IT management, project managers and technical staff.
  • Help improve service delivery through customer feedback analysis and adherence to KPIs and quality standards.
  • Plan and manage personal workload, track time spent on BAU and project tasks, and ensure high-quality, customer-focused output.

Essential Skills & Experience:

Two years' experience of implementing and supporting a similar size network structure in 1 or more of the following technical specialisms.

  • Client and Server Management
  • Unix Server Applications Oracle\Solaris\Linux\Storage
  • Wintel
  • Technical Security
  • Networking Technologies
  • Experience in the application of IT security controls
  • Experience in contributing to team activities and tasks
  • Strong customer focus
  • Ability to make sound decisions and prioritise work for self
  • Comprehensive analytical skills to comprehend complex technical reports or system performance information
  • Ability to produce meaningful and concise written reports of a technical nature
  • Ability to self-learn and maintain a comprehensive understanding of current and future trends in IT technology
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Knowledge and application of ITIL

Desirable Qualifications

  • ITIL v3 Foundation certificate or above
  • Project management PRINCE2 foundation certificate or knowledge/application of PRINCE2
  • Technical accreditations in one or more areas of technical specialism
  • Experience of supporting a diverse range of technical platforms
  • Experience working on IT projects
  • Experience in providing input to the development of strategies, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of IT Service Continuity procedures
