Although cyber security is the third most in-demand tech skill in the UK and across the globe, a new report finds that despite high-profile attacks on some of the UK’s leading companies, cyber security professionals based in the UK (77%) missed out on pay rises, more than any other technology role last year. 

This UK trend was also mirrored across the world, but with slightly fewer (71%) global cybersecurity professionals missing out on a pay rise. The report says that these findings perhaps beg the question: how hard are organisations working to keep their cyber talent?

The Harvey Nash Tech Talent & Salary Report, that surveyed over 3,600 technology professionals globally (1,394 in the UK), found that almost three times as many UK tech professionals working in Infrastructure/support (60%), DevOps (60%), and AI & Machine Learning (55%) as those in cyber security (23%) received a pay rise last year.

Although the global study found that tech professionals in the UK are the most pessimistic about expectations for more pay, almost three quarters (71%) of those working in AI & Machine Learning, over half of those in Infrastructure/Support (55%) and Software Engineering (53%) expect a salary increase in 2026 – all significantly higher than those in cyber security, where only 45% expect a pay rise.

The Harvey Nash report also found that almost half (48%) of cyber security professionals in the UK are looking to move jobs in the next twelve months, above the UK average (45%) and the 7th highest job role to plan a move.

However, despite almost half of cybersecurity professionals getting itchy feet, it doesn’t seem to be because of the threat of AI taking their job, rising workloads, or how under-resourced they expect their team to be this year. In fact, 61% of cybersecurity professionals don’t feel threatened by AI taking their job, the second highest behind Technology Leaders (64%).

The top three tech roles feeling under most threat from AI in the UK are:

  1. QA/Testing
  2. Data/BI/Analytics
  3. Product Management

Across the 1,394 UK technologists surveyed, the Harvey Nash Tech Talent Report also found the following:

Push and pull factors for technologists:

  • Push factors – For over half (56%) of UK technologists, pay retains its top position as the primary reason for considering leaving their role, with career progression continuing to come second (38%) and organisational culture not far behind (30%).
  • Pull factors – UK technologists take a wide-ranging approach to what makes their next assignment an attractive one. Over three-quarters (76%) follow the money, but the opportunity to work from anywhere is also important (69%). More than half of respondents in the UK (52%) said that they would not be prepared to accept a role that didn’t offer hybrid working, and 39% are prepared to take a lower salary to work from home more often.
  • The most important pull factors for men and women – Female technologists in the UK are slightly more concerned with factors such as pensions and flexible working hours than their male peers. In turn, men are more interested in health care plans and opportunities to travel.
  • The well-being effect – Hybrid working is also viewed as a well-being factor, with the top two benefits identified as reduced commuting times providing better use of personal time and increased productivity (84%), and improved work-life balance (81%).

Reskilling and upskilling in AI:

  • Experimenting in AI – Three-quarters (76%) report being given access to AI tools and platforms, and 36% are given dedicated time to experiment and learn.
  • Waiting for training or left to self-learn – While almost a third (32%) of UK-based organisations are investing in AI upskilling, one in five technologists are expected to self-learn, and over a quarter (26%) are waiting on formal training.

Good tech leadership:

  • Great leaders – When it comes to defining what makes a great tech leader, more than half (57%) of UK respondents say that great communication remains key, and 55% value their leader’s ability to create a positive culture within the team.
  • Deep understanding of tech – Almost half (44%) of technologists continue to value their leaders having a deep understanding of technology. Around a fifth (18%) feel that a lack of technology understanding amongst leaders is a huge barrier to delivering their tech goals, with almost a third (30%) rating it as a significant issue.

The Inclusive Workplace:

  • UK Tech sector not doing enough – While just under a half (48%) of global respondents think the tech sector is doing enough to support female participation in technology, this drops to just over a third (39%) in the UK. Furthermore, almost twice as many female respondents in the UK (25%) compared to their male counterparts (14%) believe that the tech sector is not doing enough.
  • Decrease in focus and investment in DEI – Although almost all (84%) think their organisation does enough to support diversity in the workplace, 1 in 10 technologists report a decrease in focus and investment in DEI over the last two years.
  • Sense of purpose v DEI – Almost all (87%) tech professionals in the UK stated that an organisation’s sense of purpose is important when selecting a new role, but only 63% think their approach to DEI holds the same weight. This rises to 79% when the respondent is female and 68% when the respondent identifies as any ethnicity other than white; 52% of white males agree.

A standout feature this year is tech team members’ concern that IT strategy should be clear. There are undercurrents of worry about the impact of AI – even if it also presents career opportunities. The best technology leaders are those that integrate the development and deployment of AI into a coherent overall strategy that continues to have the skills and abilities of tech professionals at its heart.”
