5 Key takeaways

AI demand is exploding. Investment isn’t
AI demand is exploding. Investment isn’t

Demand for AI skills is up 82% year-on-year, yet around half of organisations aren’t investing in upskilling. The gap isn’t awareness, it’s ownership. No one’s clearly accountable for fixing it.

'AI skills' doesn’t mean what people think it means

It’s not just coding. It’s problem-solving, data literacy, ethics, judgement, and knowing where AI shouldn’t be used. Rushing in without clarity is FOMO, not strategy.

If leaders don’t use AI, no one else will

Adoption stalls when leadership stays hands-off. The organisations making progress have leaders who actively use AI, visibly experiment, and signal that learning (and mistakes) are allowed.

AI risks widening the digital divide… fast

Around 50% of workers lack the basic tech skills needed to even start AI upskilling. Without intentional intervention, AI will advantage the “haves” and quietly leave the rest behind.

Junior roles (and career ladders) are under threat
Junior roles (and career ladders) are under threat

As AI absorbs entry-level tasks, organisations risk hollowing out the talent pipeline. The challenge isn’t just automation, it’s how tomorrow’s leaders gain experience if the first rung disappears.

What do Gen Z think about AI?

As part of filming the latest Tech Flix documentary, we attended Leeds Digital careers fair and spoke to students to see how they really feel about AI and their job prospects. Hear what they had to say below.

Hear from digital leader, Crispin Read

We caught up with Crispin Read, CEO of The Coders Guild, while at Leeds Digital Festival to hear his take on the evolving AI skills gap. Crispin shared why he believes we have moved beyond a skills‑based economy and into a potential‑based economy, where a person’s ability to learn, adapt and grow is far more valuable than their existing technical expertise.

In his view, organisations must rethink how they hire, placing potential at the centre and recognising that developing skills is now an ongoing responsibility. Rather than waiting for fully formed candidates to arrive, Crispin challenges businesses to invest in people, build capability from within, and prepare their teams for a future where adaptability is the most important skill of all.
